Rob Barron was sworn in as the new Des Moines city council member for the 1st ward, covering northwest Des Moines, including Beaverdale.

Barron, a Beaverdale resident, succeeds Chris Coleman, who chose to not run for re-election.

Barron is a Beaverdale resident and former member of the Des Moines school board. He was sworn in by his father, a former Des Moines police officer.

In a newsletter to constituents, he said his first council meeting was “uneventful.”

“Our first vote was to extend the contracts for our city leadership, including our City Manager. This is a fairly non-controversial vote and my colleagues voted unanimously for the full slate. I voted for them too, but not before making it clear that I will not be satisfied by a city government that works well for some and excludes others,” Barron wrote.
