March 7, 2024

In attendance:
Officers: President Dave Busiek, Treasurer Jay Cox-Kozel, Secretary Craig VandeVenter
Board: Eddie Fishman, Kylie Spies, Therese Herold, Karla Rangel, Josh Nelson, Jesse Coleman, Missy Reams
Guests: Danny Fast (BNA member)
- Call to Order at 7:00 p.m. – Dave
- Introduction of new board members
- Approval of Agenda: Motion carried
- Approval of February meeting minutes: Motion carried
- Treasurer’s Report and monthly financials – Jay
- Review and approval of February financials: motion carried
- March financials to be discussed and reviewed during April’s board meeting.
- Public Comment
- Danny Fast, Beaverdale resident and member of the neighborhood association. Observed meeting to learn more about the BNA, the Board, and the business of the neighborhood association.
- Beaverdale Books Bookfest – Jay
- BNA to act as fiscal agent for Beaverdale Books involvement with Bookfest in fall of 2024.
- Motion to approve 2024 grant application and financials: Motion carried.
- Bluegrass Festival Update – Eddie
- Discussed improvements, upgrades, and change of event date for 2024.
- Polk County grant money increased by $5,000.00 for 2024.
- Potential construction on the exterior of the water tower in Tower Park during 2024 festival. Discussed contingency plan(s) and transferrable permits.
- Website and Social Media Update – Josh
- Discussed redevelopment of BNA website and plans for future work following the change in Board leadership.
- Discussed BNA social media account(s) and committee members utilizing accounts to advertise committee related events to increase exposure and engagement.
- Motion to approve committee designated members as administrators for website with access and permissions to post on behalf of the BNA: Motion carried.
- Scholarship Update – Craig
- Recapped the scope of the project and the goal of the BNA scholarship for new board members and public attending meeting.
- Discussed award criteria and requirements for implementation and discussion with Hoover HS.
- Motion to add additional board members to the project to assist with development: Motion carried.
- Membership Survey – Kylie
- Recapped the scope of the project and the goal of the neighborhood survey for new board members and public attending meeting.
- Motion to use strategic planning funding from City of DSM to display survey data in exhibit at upcoming quarterly resident meeting to increase awareness and engagement: Motion carried.
- Other business
- Beaverdale park (Jay): discussed and moved for the allocation of non-earmarked beautification funds in budget to be donated to Beaverdale park redevelopment project. Motion carried.
- Streetscape along Beaver Avenue (Jay): Discussed funding sources and other fundraising efforts if necessary.
- Public Affairs (Josh): Easter Egg Hunt 3/12; SCRUB clean up event at River Place 5/18; Bike lane and path clean-up with Beaverdale Bikes between 30th Street and MILK, Jr. Pkwy 6/8.
- Beaverdale Carved Tree Scavenger Hunt, summer of 2024.
- Beaverdale Service Day (Josh): Discussed neighborhood-wide community beautification and clean-up event.
- Public Affairs Committee (Josh): Discussed realignment of committee by area of focus, events and website.
- Iowa Bird Rehabilitation (Jay): Discussed I.B.R. and upcoming fundraising Gala.
- Calvin Community Historical Content for Website/Social Media/Sidewalk: Discussed historical interviews with members of Calvin Community for additional content in the BNA’s digital and print publications.
