City of Des Moines leaders face a budget crisis next year, as state leaders have passed a new law limiting property tax growth for all cities, counties and school districts. Des Moines faces a $12 million shortfall and would like your input on where you think cuts need to be made.

A new survey is online asking for your view. It will be available through the month of July. The survey includes money-saving options and what the financial impact will be. The survey takes about 10 minutes to complete.

The city also announced a public meeting on Thursday, July 9 at 6pm at the Central Library. This will be an opportunity for the City Manager to walk through why we are in this situation and answer your questions.

In addition, First Ward Councilmember Rob Barron is hosting three public hearings in July to gather citizen input from residents living in the district he represents in northwest Des Moines. They are:

• Sunday, July 19 at 4pm at La Michoacana at 4944 Douglas Ave
• Monday, July 27 at 8am at Grounds for Celebration at 2709 Beaver Ave
• Friday, July 31 at 6pm at Joppa Experience at 1829 6th Ave
